She is a fairy who lives in the fields and mountains near San Marino in northern Italy, in the form of a cute little girl with the body of a cat. Whenever they are approached by a human, they start messing around and blocking their path.
イタリア北部のサンマリノ近郊の野山に住む妖精で、猫の体を持ったかわいい女の子の姿をしている。人が近づくと、チョコマカとちょっかいを出し、行く手をじゃまする。

They look like a human girl with cat ears. They don't need to be afraid of them because they don't know how to attack other than scratching, but those who are deceived by the cute appearance and let their guard down will end up in danger.
人間の少女に猫の耳をつけたような格好をしている。ひっかき以外の攻撃を知らないため、恐れる必要はないが、かわいい外観に惑わされて、油断していると危ない目に合う羽目になる。

Origin of the name / 名前の由来

Mayu's name comes from "Mayu Oyama", the blue-haired girl from the animated version of "Space Pirate Captain Harlock".
マユの名前はアニメーション版「宇宙海賊キャプテンハーロック」の青髪の女の子「大山 まゆ」が由来。

An official development illustration was shown in the 1987 Vol.14 of the magazine Marukatsu Famicom.
雑誌「マル勝ファミコン」1987年Vol.14にて公式の開発資料が掲載された。

Motto Atsumare! Falcom Gakuen(Comic) / もーっと集まれ!ファルコム学園(漫画)

Mayu appears in the official parody comic "Motto Atsumare! Falcom Gakuen" after volume 2.
公式のパロディ4コマ漫画「もっと集まれ!ファルコム学園」の2巻以降にマユが登場する。
The design is supposed to respect the original dots and the way the "( |　| )" like shape was drawn as a representation of eyes in Japanese comics in the 1980s.
元のドット絵と、1980年代の日本の漫画で目の表現としてあった　( |　| )　という描き方を尊重したデザインになっていると思われる。

Note

If the monster's eggs are defeated before they hatch, the color palette will remain that of the eggs and the graphics will be the same as when the monster was defeated.
MSX1, MSX2 version will be a different color than any of the usual Mayu.
FC/NES versions have the same color individuals in the usual mayu.
MOBILE PHONE version does not have this specification (if I remember correctly. Probably.)
モンスターの卵が孵化する前に倒すとカラーパレットが卵のまま倒された時のグラフィックになる。
MSX1, MSX2版は通常のマユのどれとも違う色になる。
FC/NES版は通常のマユに同じ色の個体がいる。
携帯電話版にはこの仕様はない(記憶が正しければ。恐らく)
